TIME

Why does time go faster the older you get?

Because the younger you are, each day is such a significant percentage of your life so far?  And as you get older, this percentage becomes less with each year so days increasingly become insignificant?

Because as children, we live in the moment, because we don't know there's any other way to be?  As we get older, we're wrapped up in too many things to be in the present moment, and days pass without you really realizing it?

Because we get into a routine and do the same thing day after day and they all seem alike?

Have you arrived at a point in your life where you've realized and decided that life is too short, and you need to start living differently?  Did something instigate it or was it gradual?

What did you change?

  2. I'm older by far than you, I think, and most of the time it seems time is whizzing right by. But sometimes -- usually when I'm working -- I almost think time stops. I've had rude awakenings to the brevity of life (a couple of brushes with melanoma, for instance) and have made drastic changes: left my "career" and most of my belongings behind the first time; decided to seek out the things that make me happy and to try to help others feel delight the second.

In the spirit of play, I've just tagged you. Check out my blog so you can play, too. ;)

  3. I've also read that time starts to feel like it's going faster the older you get because you tend to stop challenging your mind and having new experiences. When you're young and your brain learning is new things, it has to work harder and perform more tasks in any given second, minute, day. As you get older and most of your time is spent doing familiar, routine things, your brain doesn't have to do as much so you experience time as going by more quickly on a moment to moment basis. An interesting theory I thought.

Regardless of the cause, I've definitely noticed the effect in my life. The last 5 years have gone by soooo much faster than the 5 before that, and the 5 before that. About a year ago I had reached the point where one week at work was blending into the next until entire months were disappearing without anything to distinguish one from the next. When it got to be too much, I cut back to part time at my day job to create more time to spend on my Etsy shop and guitar lessons. But, I've found that in some ways I've just transferred the same mentality to those things, to the point where I'm in danger of souring the experience of some of my favorite pastimes. So now I'm focusing on getting to the root of the problem and changing more than just the external circumstances.

Thank you for your comment on my blog by the way :) It's so great to know there are people out there who can relate to my experience! Your work is absolutely gorgeous - I love your shop!
